Statistics on addiction, including teen addiction, suicides and neuro-degenerative diseases are on the rise at an alarming rate. Today we recognize addiction as a chronic disease that changes both brain structure and function.

Mood states are regulated by neurotransmitters, which are electro-chemicals used by the brain to govern all aspects of our life, including how we think, feel and behave. When neurotransmitters are out of balance, it results in feelings like depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and hyperactivity.

 Disrupted neurotransmitters can result from nutritional deficiencies, emotional trauma, stress, and environmental toxins….

 To restore balance to brain chemistry the person starts experiencing cravings to stimulate the production of these neurochemicals. This progressively reduces the neurotransmitter's receptors; and in time the brain will completely stop producing these neurochemicals, creating dependence.

The gut has the capability to produce these same neurochemicals that are found in the brain in high quantities. We have the power to help our gut, thus our brain, to feel good with proper nutrition and exercise.

 Scientifically, exercise has the potential to repair brain cell damage and assist in mood elevation and stabilization by increasing the production of mood-boosting neurochemicals such as dopamine and endorphins. Studies also indicate it has the added benefit of potentially tempering impulsive / compulsive behaviours, as it also increases production of serotonin. This means fewer relapses resulting in an increased recovery success rate, which is at the alarmingly low rate of 3 to 5% to date.
