Show Notes

Based in The Netherlands, John Vespasian is the author of seven books about rational living, including "When Everything Fails, Try This" (2009), "Rationality Is the Way to Happiness" (2009), "The Philosophy of Builders: How to Build a Great Future with the Pieces from Your Past" (2010), "The 10 Principles of Rational Living" (2012), "Rational Living, Rational Working: How to Make Winning Moves When Things Are Falling Apart" (2013), "Consistency: The Key to Permanent Stress Relief" (2014), and "On Becoming Unbreakable: How Normal People Become Extraordinarily Self-Confident" (2015). John has always been an avid reader, and started writing his books in 2008 after being frustrated with the content available.  “(The books available) were very much quoting each other, without actually looking at the facts” He decided to create the books that he would want to read, which were ones based on real cases, persons, principles and logic.  His work is based on the concept of “rational living”, which means you can do much better in life if you take steps backwards and look at the whole picture. You then try to make rational decisions and implement them consistently. “The philosophy (of rational living) is very simple, but implementation is extremely difficult” As human beings, we tend to be short sighted in our decisions and panic when facing adversity. In his books, John analyzes cases of real people in history who faced difficult situations. By doing so, he draws practical lessons that are based on reason and can be applied. His philosophy is different than positive thinking and The Law of Attraction, which he feels are unrealistic in most cases. Studying others in a rational way will allow you to automatically arrive at a logical decision. John believes that people are too quick to listen to the opinions of others, as well as the media.  “We are manipulated all the time, and this is very dangerous” He recommends that people listen to their emotions, but always check the facts.  “The way you extract your conclusions from the facts has to be logical” Intuition is very important, but he stresses that it shouldn’t be used in a random way.  “When you are really focused on something, you’re really motivated to do something, your brain functions at a high speed” When operating at a higher speed, the brain is able to detect opportunities much easier.  “You’re just aware; most people are asleep” John talks about Sigmund Freud, who discovered that the only way to distinguish himself as a professional was to try new things.  “He never stopped looking for new ideas and eventually he put it all together” To John, synchronicity, or being in the right place at the right time, is really not magic as it happens all the time.  He also adds that if you’re indifferent to life and just “going through the motions” every day without being curious, it’s very difficult to generate new ideas. John’s advice to people in a situation that’s complicated, and not knowing what to do, is to build their skills, assets and savings until they can figure out what to do.  “Eventually you will find a way when you hit the right opportunity” His next book is coming out on October, and all of his titles are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the Apple Store (see “INTERVIEW LINKS”).
