Brent Kisilevich is the owner/operator of Feldenkrais®LIVE online and the Okanagan Feldenkrais® Centre. He offers instruction to groups and hands on sessions for individuals. Brent shares that Feldenkrais is about improving movement and life, about educating the sense of you. He had a back injury and while some remedies or exercises gave relief, it was only temporary. In search of how to relieve his pain, he came across the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, a system designed to recognize your brain-to-body connections to improve physical movement. “If you really want to change something in your life, psychotherapy in itself isn’t enough, it doesn’t go back early enough in our history.” The connection that we have between our brain and our movement starts as early as moving in the womb. These are patterns that we have built pre-verbally and the connections follow us as patterns throughout our lives. “If we go back and explore those patterns and through movement it is possible to change that underlying foundation of how we think, how we feel and how we know ourselves.” When we think of healing our body, we think building muscles and strengthening and feeling powerful. However, in the world of Feldenkrais, it is about paying attention to the imitation of movement that is the key. Brent gives an example of athletes and how they are able to improve their skill sets by practicing Feldenkrais. It enables them to move in any direction, without hesitation or preparation. “It’s dynamically connecting how the mind works with organizing the body so that you are ready to preform.” Brent played a video of his college in Switzerland demonstrating a lesson of Feldenkrais. In this video, it shows how powerful it can be and how you feel change within you. “You could do that same thing with a 90 year old person and they can have one little change and they will have the opportunity to get out of the chair and maybe that would be all the difference that they need.” He notes that this method is effective in athletes, seniors and children; everyone will take something different from it.
