In this episode of The Wellness Show, Tyhson and Laura Fenamore discuss the topic of body image, an issue that affects a lot of people across the globe today. Laura presents effective steps that promise to help people learn to gracefully embrace their body image.
Laura begins by emphasizing that one of the things that has been most helpful to her was a conscious shift from an old way of being, marked by the need for complete control, to a more fluid “go-with-the-flow” outlook in life. This new way of living is what she calls “surrendering into grace.”
At age 24, she grappled with depression and self-loathing. Among her struggles were obesity, alcoholism, drug addiction, and smoking. She also found difficulty in recovering from the trauma of growing up with an abusive father and a neglectful mother.
This destructive cycle persisted until she met an African-American woman, whom she considers an earth-angel, that showed her another way of living. She remembers having been told, “I’m going to love you until you learn to love yourself.” Now 54 years old, Laura believes that whatever this woman did to help her had successfully turned her life around.
This encounter led to Laura’s 12 Step program and journey of overcoming depression and self-hate. She has since authored a book in which she discusses how people can learn to like and love themselves at any age, size, weight, and situation in life.
“Until we accept ourselves, we can’t love ourselves.” –Laura Fenamore
She has set for herself a commitment to pay it forward and mirror the help she had once received in order to assist other people in overcoming their own struggles. She highlights the importance of reprogramming mentality in order to accept one’s body.
“It’s changing the mind, not changing the body.” –Laura Fenamore
“Acceptance comes before self-love.” –Laura Fenamore
She presents an overview of her steps for overcoming the struggle:
Step One: Make a commitment that you’re ready, willing, and able to change, and believe that it’s possible.
Step Two: Know that you’re not alone, and there’s a lot of help in the world. Good resources include Thyson, and Laura herself, whose website is www.skinnyfatperfect.com where she offers free tools and classes. Her book, “Skinny, Fat, Perfect: Love Who You See in the Mirror,” is also available at Amazon.com.
“No matter how scary it may seem, the most powerful thing that you could do is take one action step.” –Laura Fenamore. One step can lead to doors opening to more positive things.
Anyone is encouraged to phone in and talk to Laura, who can provide a safe space to discuss personal struggles and experiences. She also offers a free 30-minute consultation that can be scheduled at www.skinnyfatperfect.com.
Apart from this, she has an upcoming course, a Body Image Mastery class offered on Zoom once a week for twelve weeks. She can accommodate a class size of 20 to 30 women. The class is set to begin on May 16, 2017.
Laura is also teaching a class consisting of three one-hour webinars called, “Do You Hate the Way You Look and Feel?” Here, she discusses three proven ways to attain one’s desired body without having to go on a chronic diet.
